Classroom Community

A direct definition from the Oxford’s Canadian dictionary, of the word ‘community’ is “a group of people having common ties or interests and living in the same locality or district, and subject to the same laws.” This definition tells us a whole lot about a ‘community’, but a positive classroom community is a classroom where all the classmates are willing to cooperate with each other, accept each other for who they are and treat each other with all the ten character matters traits. The ten traits are respect, responsibility, empathy, integrity, perseverance, initiative, courage, optimism, honesty and fairness. Each and every trait is essential in constructing a positive classroom community.
A positive classroom community/learning environment has a beneficial affect on both teachers and their pupils. A positive learning environment allows students to be able to enjoy school and spend their time doing what they are supposed to do, learning and getting ready for the real world or a higher level of school, as opposed to worrying if they would be excluded or oppressed. No student should be treated with prejudice, be stereotyped or be discriminated against. Every student should have a feeling of belonging.
The benefits of a positive classroom community is that everyone would be willing to share (generous), assist other’s in need of help, solve each other’s problems and stand up for one another. A positive classroom community may also put more confidence into people who are usually timid. If the whole class was supportive and sympathetic, people would be more courageous and wouldn’t be afraid of being laughed at. For example, if everyone were empathetic, students would do better at subjects such as physical education and drama and dance.
