Analyse Clothes
The short story is written in 1995 by the author Chita Banerjee Divakarun. Clothes is a short story we can see that, because it is fiction and we do not have many characters.
The story takes place in two different countries, and therefore our setting is changing, in addition to the symbolic and norms. The story is written in modern time, and we can see that because, they have a 7-eleven, and an airplane appear as object in the text. The text mainly takes place at two different locations, in India and in America. We do not exactly know where in India she lives, we do know it is in a little village, and nearby the lager city Calcutta. Because we are told that, her father has brought a special sari for her to wear for the bride viewing. We know the story takes place in USA and more specific California, we can tell that because we are told that Somesh lives in California . The social class, they live in are not the wealthiest but either not the poorest, they can afford an expensive sari, and the plane trips, from India to USA. Then we can tell they are either not the wealthiest, because they live in a little village, where there is not a lot of job opportunities to earn a whole lot of money.
We got two main characters witch becomes a couple. Then we got some minor characters, we have some friends of Sumita witch names are Deepali and Redha, which she has grown up together with, then she lives with both her mother and father in India.
Somesh, we know lives with his family and provides them with a home, and food. He takes care of his family. Sumita is an Indian woman who lives by the Indian traditions and norms. Therefor she cannot decide herself, whom to marry. Sumita do not have a completely dark skin witch also indicates that her family is of better rank.
