Co-occurring disorders of ADHD
There are some common co-occurring disorders associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The National Resource Center on AD/HD has stated that many symptoms of other disorders will overlap with ADHD (Para. 1 pg. 1). The first of which is disruptive behavior disorders. These disorders include Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Conduct Disorder (CD) (National Resource Center on ADHD, 2003). Oppositional Defiant Disorder can be seen as patterns of “arguing with multiple adults, losing one’s temper, refusing to follow rules, blaming others, deliberately annoying others, and being angry” (National Resource Center on ADHD, 2003). These individuals may be seen as problem makers or unreasonable. They often find themselves involved in conflicts with others, and may have difficulty controlling themselves in unpredictable situations. Conduct Disorder can be viewed as putting forth effort to break the rules and not get caught (National Resource Center on ADHD). Often these individuals are viewed by others to be delinquent. These individuals may also show signs of aggression towards “people or animals, destroy property, lie or steal things from others, run away, skip school or break curfews” (National Resource Center on ADHD). According to the National Resource Center individuals with both CD and AD/HD are more likely to experience social and emotional failure due to these conditions (Para. 4 pg. 2). Due to the social isolation that often accompanies these conditions individuals may also experience depression, and feelings of failure. These individuals may lack close friendships and experience rejection from others (Low 2007). This could be due to these individuals inabilities to control their anger and aggression. Often these individual’s moods also play apart in others views of them.
