Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I would like to introduce you a good Hollywood drama film— Cold Mountain. This film is based on the same name novel by Charles Frazier. What is interesting is that although the background sets in Haywood County, North Carolina, it was filmed mostly in Romania, Eastern Europe. The major reason is the much lower costs in the region; on the other hand, Romanian region was less marked by modern life comparing to nowadays American region: fewer power lines, telephone poles, paved roads and so on. For the similar geographical landscape of both regions, we will not find out “Ah, that’s Romania instead of America!”

Cold Mountain is a 2003 film directed by British director Anthony Minghella. This film is rated R for violence and sexuality, it runs an hour and a half. There are 3 main protagonists in this film: Inman (acted by Jude Law), a hard to defeat man loyal to his love; Ada (Nicole Kidman), a southern educated girl used to be shy, dreamy and fragile, but during the time of awaiting Inman, she matures dramatically and survives in the very tough war time. Ruby ( Renée Zellweger) both a model and a friend for Ada; she is a strong-willed, practical woman with keen insight. The antagonist is the local leader of the home guard, Teague, a murderous villainwho hunts and often kills deserters from the Confederate army and terrorize citizens. They all play their role well, but in my opinion, Renée’s vivid and unaffected performance is the best instead of Kidman.
