The Color of Water Book Project
Plot: The Color of Water is a autobiography written by James McBride. It can be divided into two part. One part is about James McBride’s life, and another part is about his mother Ruth’s life. When James was a child, he lived with his brothers and sisters. There are twelve children lived in a small chaotic house. Jame’s father was dead and his mother Ruth was working so hard to earn money and had no time to take care of her family. James was curious about his race and identity. However, Ruth’s did not want to talk about it and simply said he is human being. Ruth’s constantly remind her children of the importance of education, but she did not really have time to take care of every child. It caused some of her children included James went to wrong way. After Jame’s stepfather died, he became a bad guy who did not go to school and even fell into crime and drug. However, he changed himself became good guy again with his friends’ help. He finally received a master degree in Columbia University and get marry with Stephanie. He also has three children which called Azure, Jordan, and Nash.
Ruth’s came to US when she was two years old. She followed her family and travel around of America because his father Tateh is a rabbi. Finally, Tateh was tired to be a rabbi and settled in Suffolk, Virginia. He opened a store to make a living. Tateh was a terrible husband and father. He abused Ruth by touch her body sexually and force Ruth and her brother Sam work a lot in his store. He also cheated her mother Mameh and mocked her in public. He selling items in a high price to black people because he hate black people. Sam left home when he was fifteen because he can’t stand his father forcing him do a lot of work and treating him so bad. He joined the military and died in a war. Ruth got pregnant by Peter, her black boyfriend without her father noticed. Mameh sent her to New York and had an abortion. Because her family not allowed her and disgusted...
