WK 9 Final Draft Research Paper
The United States education system is one of the lowest ranking systems nationally. Before the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, only a few acts were in place. Those laws enforced were outdated and did not include all children. This new law has had its ups and downs, but its intentions are well meaning. The purpose of this new law is to ensure that the children in today’s society have an opportunity to receive an equal education. This research paper will thoroughly examine the intended purpose, benefits, and shortcomings that the No Child Left behind Act of 2001 has had on the special education system.
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 became a law on January 8, 2002. It was signed by President George W. Bush during his administration. This new law was to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 which was originally created for disadvantaged students. The education system has been on the forefront of all policies to try to improve. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 was introduced by President Lyndon B. Johnson for his “War on Poverty” campaign. (Brown-Nagin, 2012) President Johnson believed that poverty should not be an issue in order to receive a proper education.

In the beginning, when the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 was introduced, democrats and republicans both supported this new act regardless of the problems that might occur. Now it is a different story. When this act became a law it sparked a debate between educators and parents on how it would affect special education. The law requires that all children are able to pass reading and math by 2014.
