THE RISE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE REVOLUTIONARY CHANGES IN MASS MEDIA
Abstract

This paper is a brief introduction to one of the raging topics in mass media and journalism today. There are revolutionary changes taking place in mass media particularly for journalists and those working in traditional media outlets. I explore the history of print journalism in America and the impact that social media has had and will continue to have on its survival and development in the 21st century. We look at the pros and cons of social media and how it differs from traditional print journalism and some of the implications for the future of the entire industry. Social Media has become ubiquitous and has managed to compress the news cycle in such a way that many media outlets have abandoned the old school, be the first to report quest. In today’s microwave new cycle new priorities have taken sway. My major goal with this paper cannot be stated any better than written by Nic Newman. “The issues and conclusions are framed within a wider debate about the importance of these developments to the changing shape of mainstream media organizations, to levels of civic engagement, debates about quality, trust and accuracy, and to discussions about the practice and future of journalism itself.” Newman 2009. Indeed the debate raging over social media and communication is integral to the future and shape of our “fourth estate” or maybe we are seeing the emergence of a “fifth estate”.
