Community service is important in one’s life because it is not only character building but it forms the foundation for a strong community. Community service can be viewed on both a personal on communal level. It is important to recognize all that community service represents to both the individual and the community as a whole. However, it is imperative to understand what a community truly is. Only with this understanding can someone grasp the importance of community service.
Community is literally defined as a group of people living in a shared geographical location. Each community has shared social norms and members of the community obey these norms. This is the only way for a community to function effectively. It also important to recognize that although different communities are divided by individual characteristics we are all joined by similarities. Therefore, the world is one large community. In many ways what affects one community affects us all as a whole.
When focusing on individual communities it is important to recognize the functions of the different parts, which make the whole. Every member within a community plays a role. There are the politicians who help in the creation of the laws to be followed within the community as well as broadcasting the feelings and concerns of other community members to rest of the collective. There are those of different classes within the community who each fulfill a different occupation within the total environment present. Also, there are those who are viewed negatively by others in the community. These are criminals or deviants who are involved in community service to pay retribution for their misdeeds. These individuals are important to the community and need by recognized when discussing the importance of community service.
