Law enforcement professionals refer to different types of literature on and off the job for solutions, opinions, perspectives, and much more. Many popular topics of concern in the field of criminal justice are often published monthly or quarterly in law enforcement journals. The Police Chief, FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, and Police Quarterly are only a few resources available to law enforcement personnel.
The Police Chief is a monthly published magazine by the International Association of Chiefs of Police; intended for the practitioner in the field. Not only is The Police Chief available as a hardcopy of a subscription rate of $25 per year but online. September 2003 was the first issued that was placed online, but you can archive back to issues in 1994 and a few selected ones before that. Before entering the actual website, I thought that on each issue there would be a selected Police Chief of the month on the front page. When I viewed the archived issues, turns out that I was partially correct. Many of the covers photos were of the main stories in the issue itself. For instance, the September 2011 issue’s front cover was of the ten year anniversary of 9/11 and the main article was about the lesson learned by the New York City Police Department. While browsing the The Police Chief website, the one thing that caught my attention the most about the monthly issues was the “Legislative Alert” section. This section is informing the readers of what is currently in Legislators hands and what could be approved and affect society. I believe The Police Chief magazine would be valuable if I wanted to attend a Police Chief conference or even wanted to learn more about what Police Departments are using to advance their departments.
