My name is Kelly Beebe. I live in Stephentown NYI. I own a mobile home. It seems like yesterday my son was a baby. Well a lot has happened since then in the past 20 years. When I was pregnant with my son I was in a abusive relationship with my son Joey's father. He beat me wile I was pregnant. We lived in Pennsylvania. Eight hours away from my family or any close friends that could help me. Every time I left him he found me and threatened the few friends I did have. I knew that it was time to take extreme action. I was in my fourth month of pregnancy. The beating and humiliation he put me through the day before was overwhelming. I waited for him to go to work, I called a cab and threw my belongings that was in a garbage bag out the third story window. It was so heavy and I was weak with morning sickness and a bruised up body that I could not carry it down the steps. The cab brought me to the emergency room and from there to a battered woman's shelter. I was 22 years old, scared, and alone.
When I arrived at the shelter they informed me that I could only stay for two nights. They were aware of my sons father and knew how dangerous he was. He had an ex-wife he did similar things to. They feared he would find the shelter and put the other residents at risk. Well I called my Aunt Susan and the next morning she took the eight hour drive to pick me up. I was afraid that he would go and harm my family so I went to a shelter in Pittsfield, Ma, the Elizebeth Freeman Center. They helped me find myself. Taught me some life skills and some parenting classes. They saved my life. I was there for about four months. Then the most amazing thing happened they had three section 8 certificates. There were twenty-two women in the shelter. They put all of our names in a hat and I won. I could not believe it. I was going to be able to get an apartment for the baby and I and did just that.
