The ability to listen and communicate is a vitally important piece in having a successful business. A company with management team members incapable of communicating effectively or listening appropriately will have a hard time sustaining success. “When 1000 executives were asked to list the ideal manager’s skills, listening ranked number one.” (Adler & Elmhorst, 2010, p.70). As a company grows one of the first things that will get disrupted is the communication within the company. In the case of Computer Solutions this has happened. Computer Solutions business grew much faster than the operations and structure of the company. The company was forced to implement new policies and procedures while growing to keep up with the business and the right steps were not taken to help it succeed. This same scenario happens to businesses each day. By applying a few important strategies, business can help to avoid these issues.
Marissa and Tran encountered a few different barriers that affected the communication between them and how their business was operated. The first barrier to listening that has occurred is a problem with the communication channel. Due to the nature of Marissa’s and Tran’s positions they do not spend much if any time working together. They do not encounter much face to face time to discuss their issues within the business. Marissa spends most of her time away from the business calling on customers and having meetings whereas Tran spends all of his workday within the business performing a much more isolated role. Another barrier to listening that has taken place is a bit of egocentrism by both parties. Both Marissa and Tran believe that their role is more important than the other persons and that they do not have any time in their schedule to meet with the other.
