Design Brief:

To design and construct a coffee table to be suitable for functional use in my sitting room at home.

Brief Analysis:

• The coffee table must fit in with other furniture in the room.
• It must be a suitable height so as to be functional when the user is sitting in a chair.
• It must not be too obstructive in the room.
• It must have a nice finish, similar to the other furniture.

I feel the brief I have set myself is very fair and achievable in the time period I have to complete the project. It will be the first time I have started on such a brief and I look forward to the task ahead.

The coffee table must fit in with other furniture in the room
I will achieve this by using wood that is of similar colour the furniture already in the room.
I will also use the same type of wood as the wood already in the room so as the piece does not stand out too much.

It must be a suitable height so as to be functional when the user is sitting in a chair.
My aim is to make the table a suitable height to be used not only when the user is sitting down having a cup of coffee but also so it can be used when someone is standing up. To achieve this I will need to make it a height somewhere in between a traditional coffee table and a kitchen table.

It must not be too obstructive in the room
I would like for the piece to look as though it came as a set with the furniture already in the room. I want to look the right size in proportion to the room and the furniture contained in the room.

Some Key Aspects:
Appearance: Similar to other furniture in the room. Not to obstructive.
Colour: Similar to the other furniture in the room.
Cost: Depending on the size of the chosen piece/ materials.
Environment: I would like to use locally sourced wood.
Finish: Similar in colour to other wood in the room. Depending on shade of wood, possibly varnished.
Function: To be suitable for use as a coffee table in a family...
