For this class we were directed to compose a final paper consisting of our understanding of the reading assignments as well as the implications of new knowledge to the subject of crime and society related to three different topics that had been chosen for us. The three topics that I will be addressing in this paper are Crime and It’s Costs, focusing in on white collar crime, Measuring Crime, highlighting official crime data compiling and statistics, and lastly I will also be discussing Social, Cultural and Economic Sources of Crime, detailing women as victims, women as resisters.
I found reading and conducting research on white collar crime quite interesting considering the economic state that not only out country is in, but also the world. I had never been very interested in business news or how it was affecting the economy as a whole, and then there was all this news about how the government is going to bailout all these multi-million dollar companies, because if they go under we all go under. I really started to wonder what they were all doing with their money? A little background on what white collar crime consists of, a definition, white collar crime is defined as white collar crime is any illegal act, punishable by a criminal sanction; this is committed in the course of a legitimate occupation or pursuit by a corporation or by an otherwise respectable individual of high social standing (Conklin, p. 69). White collar crime today encompasses a variety of nonviolent crimes usually committed in commercial situations for financial gain, common white-collar offenses include: antitrust violations, computer and internet fraud, credit card fraud, phone and telemarketing fraud, bankruptcy fraud, healthcare fraud, environmental law violations, insurance fraud, mail fraud, government fraud, tax evasion, financial fraud, securities fraud, insider trading, bribery, kickbacks, counterfeiting, public corruption, money laundering, embezzlement, economic...
