Sarahlee Dias September 13, 2008 Criminal Justice Persuasive Essay Not many people know that jaywalking is one of the most common laws broken in the United States today. Jaywalking is when someone commits the act of crossing the street without using the cross walk. Jaywalking is so common that law enforcers don’t even stop it. I, myself just found out recently it was against the law. The United States has so many ridiculous laws nowadays that it’s hard to keep up. Despite the fact that this law is torpid, it has negative outcomes when used in court cases. I’m sure you have crossed the streets with friends and haven’t used the cross walk. Has anyone ever called your attention for doing so? Now put yourself in this situation; it’s nine pm at night, the light up ahead is red. You cross the street without using the crosswalk and you get hit by a bus. Who is to blame for this accident? Is it the person who was jaywalking or the driver who wasn’t paying attention? Research shows that the jaywalker would be blamed in most court cases. True, this accident could have been prevented if the person had used the crosswalk, but couldn’t it had been prevented if the bus driver would have paid more attention? The answer to that question is yes. Accidents like the one mentioned above happen everyday nationwide. Jaywalking is an unnecessary law that is neither followed nor enforced. Why should the people of the U.S. have to deal with such laws in court if they aren’t obeyed or enforced in the real world. I almost lost two very close family members last year to drunk drivers in the big city of New York. Luckily they survived but only to live life in wheelchairs for the rest of their lives. Yes they were jaywalking, but shouldn’t people take into consideration that the driver that hit them wasn’t in a conscious state of mind; he was in fact drunk. In less than a split second I almost lost two people close to me. Both my cousins and the drunk driver got fined. Drivers now a days...
