The healthcare industry has been at the forefront of America politics for over 40 years and currently it is the most debated issue in the America. The industry is and will continue to evolve rapidly. There are critical decisions to be made over the next 6 – 12 months and the impact of those decisions, whether the outcome is good or bad, must be made. Some of these decisions will impact small businesses and how Americans purchase healthcare in general. A small business owner you could be mandated to provide coverage for your employees or face a significant penalty if you elect not provide comprehensive benefits. Conversely the population as a whole could potentially purchase benefits from a healthcare exchange rather than purchase benefits via an employer sponsored plan. Nik, a new executive at UnitedHealth Group, must decide how to best position the companies products and services within healthcare modernization. A new executive Nik must decide which resources to depend upon when making these critical decisions. The decision-making process is a key skill that must developed by a new executive while forces, influences, culture and work environment of organization influence this process.
Nik is using the consensus because he must work across several business segments and will need the input from several segment leaders to employ his strategy. The cross functional team involved in the process agree on the decision-making model cost-benefit analysis. They also agree all subsequent decisions will be made utilizing the democratic style. The impact of this decision means Nik must prepare a comprehensive analysis and appropriate recommendations to present to senior management. At which time, everyone involved in the process will have the same information in order to vote on the next course of action for UnitedHealth Group.
