The article “Should firms go beyond profits? Milton Friedman vs. Broad CSR” discuses two views on CSR falling along opposite ends of CSR continuum: Milton Friedman’s narrow vs. ‘Broad’ CSR approach. Through the lens of this article the case study of Ben & Jerry’s is explored to discover how has the takeover by a multinational corporation impacted and challenged the company’s core mission and CSR profile. The paper begins by representing and discussing the both views as they are formulated in the article, as well as real business case examples. Then, the challenges and response of Ben & Jerry’s to these are analyzed to conclude about the impact caused by the takeover. The resulting findings are that the company was forced to modify its approach to conduct business and focus on the financial performance in addition to the corporate core activist beliefs and philanthropy. The company has remain true to its CSR profile, has invested and been successful in a number of sustainability programs since the acquisition.
