Cyclops Myth Summary of the Myth: The Cyclops myth is divided into two generations; they are completely different in context and background. The only resemblance between the two is the general physical appearance of one eye, large bodies and muscular physique. First Generation/*Hesoid’s Cyclops*: This generation was viewed to be excellent and obedient workers. After their father banished them to Hades for their hideous figures, Zeus freed them. As a gift, they created Zeus’ thunderbolts. In addition to thunderbolts, they also provided Poseidon with his trident, Artemis with her bow and arrow, and the helmet that Hades gave to Perseus on his quest to kill Medusa. They are very active in other Greek mythology. It is believed that their ability to blacksmith is related to their single eye. Blacksmiths covered one of their eyes to keep both eyes from being blinded by flying sparks, essentially leading to them only having one eye that was useful. *Second Generation/Homer’s Cycolps*: This generation is more commonly known to our culture now. They are often viewed as a monster with a taste for human flesh and utter disregard for human life. Polyphemus is the most famous of this generation. He is the Cyclops that appeared in Homer’s Odyssey and was the son of Poseidon. Is now believed that Polyphemus was a local monster or demon before Homer added him as a Cyclops to the Odyssey.
