In the book Drive by Daniel Pink, he discusses how people are motivated and offers a perspective that is slightly different than the traditional view of motivation. Traditionally in the workplace it was thought and implemented that to motivate workers they needed tangible concrete rewards. Essentially carrots on a stick to motivate a person or animal. And the possibility of punishment if work was not satisfactory. Pink does not recommend this. All it does is cause stress and demotivates workers. Although some work tasks are so mundane that what he calls carrots are necessary and a version of the traditional view is used. He recommends for these tasks to allow people to complete the work in there own way and not with the threat of punishment.
Pink discusses how to manage employees to become productive and motivated. All of this motivation is done without the lure of the employee getting more money or a bonus as an immediate payoff to the productivity. He truly examines what is at the core of what makes people work at a job and do it well. Once a certain level of compensation, work environment, and benefits is met, it does not matter how much more one is paid. The work is based on humanity. The human element. The need to be recognized and feel valued is what is important. Pink describes how to motivate workers in the modern world through three principles. The first being autonomy. Allowing workers to direct their own work lives and how to get tasks completed. The second is mastery. Allow workers to get better at what they do and promote growth. And the third is Purpose. Letting the workers to take ownership of their work and the work as a whole in the big picture of the business.
Pink’s book helped clarify motivation by expanding on the discussions we had in class. The first is that he was able to spell out specific ways that motivate people, which was very helpful as a individual who is going out into the business world. The second was...
