Abstract: The following sections will discuss upon the topic, data mining; it is written to those who are of interest. As a matter of fact, data mining is just recently gaining a considerable amount of attention from a wide range of individuals, involving various strategic and logical techniques. This report will include computational views, a classification of data mining techniques and highlight certain aspects of data mining. 1.0 Overview The process of organizing and validating data from statistics and artificial intelligence is known as “data mining", also referred to as “knowledge discovery”. However, it is not strictly based on modeling and prediction alone. Data mining requires the analysis of data and the use of software techniques for finding patterns and regularities in sets of data— making it easier for certain individuals to obtain information. Note: Data mining can take on many forms: database systems, spreadsheets, text files, and webpages. 2.0 Why Data Mining? Data mining is currently one of the most trending fields in computer sciences. In fact, it is noted to be an essential field to the twenty first century. Taking into account that it is widely used in business (E.g., insurance, banking, retail), science research (E.g., astronomy, medicine), and government security (E.g., detection of criminals and terrorists). Not to mention, it is ongoing; new information to be absorbed each day.
