American literature has many forms and can be deciphered in many different ways. Over the years, writers have influenced it to transform into the many different genres we recognize today. It is evident that these genres came about through various authors and their different perceptions of everyday life. This play contains many different genres including realism, modernism and regionalism. Although these three genres exist, realism is the main one. This genre revolves around rational thought and real life situations. In David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, realism is the most prominent genre. This play is a perfect example of a realist’s work. There are many different realistic traits that can be found throughout this play.
In my opinion, realism shows many different traits, many of which are portrayed in Glengarry Glen Ross. This genre overwhelmingly is represented throughout this play. After reading the first scene, one can automatically tell that this play falls into the realistic genre. The characters are very crude and cut throat, the play revolves around these individuals and this is a realistic trait. The entire mood of this play is very serious and straight forward. The characters in the play are very straight forward with each other and are not afraid to say how they feel. Realism involves speaking truth (The Rise of Realism). This play is very realistic in that it involves real human emotion and shows the true nature of man. Glengarry Glen Ross is about five different sales men who are all trying to get the top leads in a real estate business. They all are very manipulative, especially Moss. Moss manipulates Aaronow into being an accomplice by telling him about his vicious plan to steal the leads, but then tells him that he, Aaronow, must be the one to steal the leads, not Moss; and by so manipulating him into their plan so that they can get the top leads which ultimately leads to money (Klinkowitz, Jerome, and Patricia B.
