In The Bicycle, a chapter from The Color of Water is a narrative passage that describes James McBrider’s life as a child and his interactions with his family members. The words used in this passage were simple with an easy understanding for the reader. In the passage, the sentence structure was a mixture of short and long sentences that were written in the active voice. The author also used parallelism as his stylistic device for writing, and the descriptive sentences expressed his writing style. The writer’s style in this passage is very descriptive with detailed words, good sentence structure, and an easily comprehended scheme. The writer utilizes a broad array of words that contributes effectively to the narrative style that he is trying to portray. Using many informal words such as colloquialism which can be seen in words such as Ma, reefer, and c’mon. The writer uses simple vocabulary and informal language to give the effect of common conversation between himself and the reader. The words, in structure, and fairly short so that they emit a steady rhythmic reading pattern that is similar to how people talk every day. The words ultimately create a style in which the tone is more natural compared to structure and formal. The variation of sentence structure furthermore contributes to the writer’s style. There are complex sentences and simple sentences. However, the sentences that the writer uses are rather lengthy. The longer sentences in combination with the variation of sentence structure offer a more fluid writing style. Also, the syntax of sentences adds to the effectiveness of the style, the syntax is not traditional. The syntax in many sentences has been inverted to fit the more informal style of the writer. “Me and Mommy…” (11) And me and my hanging out boys…” (6) Are two instances of informal syntax.
