The death sentence is by far the most extreme punishment that can be issued to a person for whatever it is that he or she has done to be placed in prison. There are many ways that a person can be put to death, some harsher than others. It has been a useful way of reprimanding disobedient people for hundreds of years. Its effectiveness is the reason why it is still a form of punishment that is used today. If it was not useful then it would have been obsolete many years ago. It is indeed a productive way that one person can pay for whatever it is that he/she has done to be in that instance in the first place.
For the most part, a person must commit a serious felony in order to receive the death sentence. Although there are other ways to be issued the extreme punishment of the death sentence, a large amount of people who receive it have either murdered someone or has done something to harm a person physically, mentally, or emotionally. For example, rape is something that may hurt one person mentally and/or emotionally. This way of punishment may sound very harsh and cruel but the only way to receive such punishment is to do the same to another human being.
It is unfortunate to see that in some states the death penalty is no longer a used form of punishment. It has been an endless debate on whether or not the death penalty should be a “right” way of punishing a felon. Even though some people may think that it is unethical, it needs to be done because if a person who kills another person gets out of prison, what is there to stop that person from doing the same thing it is that he/she did to end up in prison in the first place?
If it weren’t for the death penalty, there would be many more criminals than there are today. Studies prove that the death penalty has decreased the amount of murders in certain places in the United States.
