The very definition of art may vary from one person’s opinion to another. It has been said that for centuries the many have debated without resolution of defining the word “art” (Wikipedia, 2013. The definition of visual art can be described as the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power (Merriam-Webster, 2013). It is a creative form of communication through several different outlets. These may include plays, paintings, sculptures, dance, and so much more.
The Visual Arts are an art form that produces a primarily visual piece, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, filmmaking, and architecture. Although the definition describes Visual Arts as primarily visual, many disciplines within the art world involve and utilize aspects of visual art, such as performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts. Visual Arts use media (materials, images, signs, and symbols) and technology to communicate (Wikipedia, 2013).
"The Visual Arts are about art for society, art for the self, art for religion, art for profit and art for art’s sake. Types of Visual arts are as varied as media, subject matter, and technology allow. Visual Art can be a painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, computer and digital graphics, architecture, ceramics, and Visual Design which covers the more functional works of art” (Canley DaVinci Group, 2013).
In the art world, most will agree that all fine art is visual art, but that all visual art is not necessarily fine art. In general, most would agree that the motivation for the art would be the biggest factor in determining whether art is Visual Arts or Fine Arts.
