Definition of Family
There are many ways to define the word family. Most people think of a group of
people living together in the same household related by blood such as your mom, dad, sister, and
brothers. This is the traditional definition. This type of family is fading away in today’s society
and families are becoming more alternative . Most modern families only have one parent, have a
step mother or father, and in some cases have adoptive parents. Because of this more families are
creating extended family bonds of support by those in which they interact with on a
daily basis at work, school, neighborhood, and community. To me family is the constant growth
of people bonded together in a special relationship. Family is support, tradition, and sacrifice.
Support is a key characteristic in a family bond. Support forms a solid feeling of belonging
to in a family. As a single parent, support is important to have in my family. Lacking the support
of a significant other does not reflect on the bond my family has because the support and love
from other relationships with my family and friends make up for it. These are the challenges that
make my family stronger. Friends, neighbors, and communities are beginning to play bigger
roles in more families today because of things like teenage pregnancy and single parent homes.
More families are teaming up with others to make up in the areas in which they are lacking
forming bonds between them. This is evidence of loyalty family and friends have for one another
in times of need. Because many families are more diverse, many family values are also being
inherited throughout these interactions between families. This diversity creates a better
