Public Health and Welfare
When you read or say public health and welfare what images and/or definitions come to mind. Majority of people tend to think that public health means healthcare for the poor; however, public health is much more than that. Despite the fact that the meaning of public health has changed through the years the present meaning is “the totality of all evidence-based public and private efforts that preserve and promote health and prevent disease, disability and death (Riegelman & Kirkwood, n.d.).” Majority of people think of welfare as a negative thing. When people are asked about welfare the first thing many say is it free money and food for women, children and the poor. There are also a good amount of people who will say that immigrants come here to get it. Welfare in the United States ordinarily alludes to the federal government welfare programs that were created to help those in need such as the unemployed. It is also to assist those that do not receive enough wages from their employment. There are a variety of services that are offered through this program which are but not limited to Medicaid, the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program, and Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) (DHS, 2015).
The Department of Human Services (DHS) of Michigan deals with public health and welfare. It provides public assistance, child and family welfare services. It also oversees Michigan's child and adult protective services, foster care, adoptions, juvenile justice, domestic violence, and child support programs.
