Design and technology Term One Assessment. A comparison of International and Australian Designer James Dyson and Marc Newson
James Dyson- International designer James Dyson is a famous international designer and works in the industrial design setting. He was born in England in 1947, and is the founder of the James Dyson Foundation. He is the inventor of products such as the 1974 Ball Barrow, a water-filled plastic garden roller; the design was exceptionally efficient, as it did not rust and did not leave wheel marks on the grass. In 1978 he designed the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner using Cyclone technology. The cleaner filtered dust and removed dirt from the airflow efficiently, because nothing obstructed the airflow, the Dyson did not clog, and did not loose suction. His motto was to always improve what already existed; by doing this he enhanced technology on a major scale. The Dyson foundation has over 700 engineers, and aims to build and improve, to make life easier. Similar to other inventors and designers, the James Dyson Foundation uses a Design process. The company begins with a frustration, and a simple setback which they wish to enhance and develop. The frustration then leads to an inspired idea to create and resolve existing problems, with new and better solutions. Using a design brief, he assesses what he wants to improve. For example with the DC22 vacuum cleaner the company wanted to design a vacuum cleaner that was compact but a vacuum that still had as much efficiency as possible. Moving to precise design specifications a group of engineers list what the product should have, what it should be able to do and what it should look like. Through design specifications they know roughly where the product is headed. The engineers start by creating a vision specification. Through basic diagrams the team consider the main factors of the machine such as its appearance and its central features. The design process begins to develop as limitations are...
