“Good leaders are made, not born”. Leadership is about setting a better path for a group and a leader has the ability to eliminate obstacles, for growth, development, and performance within a team. They also have skills to get people to want to do their jobs rather than forcing them to do a job. He or she has the capability to motivate and inspire people to want to reach a goal and hold them together until they can reach that goal. The most important skill a leader must possess is being able to set a direction or vision for their association.
Influence is a leader’s most powerful ally, as it is the foundation of a leader’s effectiveness. The person whom I believe to be a strong and honorable leader, was most skilled at his ability to motivate and influence me. In my 4th and final year of ROTC, I was eager to begin the year because I was chosen to be a flight chief for the years 08-09. Not only that, but I was also in charge of physical training which occurred every Friday of the week. I was in a position of leadership as an Athletics Officer and a Flight Chief at once, a situation that not many people have been in. I was proud and determined to begin my final year only to discover that I had to choose one job or the other. I was devastated and there was only one person knew how I felt inside. It was one of the most difficult choices I ever made, but in the end I chose to be a flight chief, which was the lower ranked position between the two. Even though I made my choice, the job that was given to me was the position as the Athletics Officer. Once again I was devastated, but someone was there to help me get through it. This person influenced me to keep my job by making me feel needed and important -- as if I were the only person for the job. He motivated me by letting me know that he “…couldn’t picture anyone else doing a better job.
