Determining the Perfect Position
The knowledge and ability to perform the tasks of a supervisor adds to a person’s value. Business searches for experienced leaders to fill positions based on need. In this situation a board meeting discussion regarding a proposed expansion identified a gap in executive management. Currently the president handles the position of chief operating officer (CEO) and chief operations officer (COO). The expansion requires the company to separate the two positions and hire a chief operations officer. The need for a person results from additional executive workloads. The condition occurs because the acquisition doubles the current number of branches. Craig Parr possesses the expertise and leadership abilities to handle the newly required COO position.
Hiring any executive management position requires the board of directors to evaluate future requirements based on the mission and vision statement. The job requires a person who not only deals with the additional branches but also facilitates change with the acquisition employees. This includes the ability to provide stability for more than 200 employees. “Successful organizations will be fast on their feet,” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 590). The acquisition requires a leader who facilitates change.
Along with the original subordinates, the additional branches include groups of concerned employees. The COO position facilitates transformation of the new group by initiating change, or pressing staff to assist in attaining the goal, (Yukl, 2010). In prior acquisitions the new staff attended one initial meeting after the purchase. The business failed to provide further procedures to facilitate the transition. As a COO with experience in acquisition change management, the retention of the original staff adds value to the company. Craig Parr possesses the ability and experience to “influence...
