Detroit

In James Howard Kunstler’s article, The Geography of Nowhere, he described how Detroit was before the 1967 riot. He went on to say how alive the city of Detroit was and told of the events that people attended. Kunstler also stated how Detroit is perceived today. He stated, “Detroit looks like a set for some movie about the last hours of the Planet Earth.” He thought Detroit is not as moving or as crowded of a city that it appeared to be years ago. The city of Detroit does have a few rough spots as Kunstler stated, the media does tend to put a negative image in people’s heads, but nonetheless there are excellent qualities that Detroit possesses that I have learned from my experiences.

Kunstler seems to, to an extent, underestimate Detroit in his article. He makes the city out to be basically a deadbeat city. The city offers a unique night life, from sporting events to shows to casinos; you will find hundreds of people enjoying themselves in what some people call a “dangerous” city. Of course, Detroit is not the safest city. It is not a place where someone would walk around looking for something to do. Generally people go to Detroit if they already have their outing planned. Indeed, Detroit’s skyline is gorgeous, but what about the rest of the city? How many people think positively when they hear the words Detroit city? How many people boast about living in or around the city of Detroit? People do not pride themselves on the city itself anymore. More so, they pride themselves on the sports teams and their fields, along with places such as the Fox Theatre and Belle Isle. When people travel to Detroit, it is usually for one of four reasons. They visit the area to go to a football game at Ford Field, a baseball game at Comerica Park, a hockey game at Joe Louis Arena, or a show at the Fox Theatre. If a person were to be asked what they think of when they think of Detroit, chances are they would think about crime or how it is considered “the ghetto”. Some people...
