Devil’s Peak: The story behind the name
If you have ever been to CapeTown,South Africa, you have most probably seen Table Mountain. Have you noticed the point that has dark clouds gathering there – That’s the Devil’s Peak
There was a man called Old man Wagner but he prefered to be called Bill. He loved to smoke tobbaco. Unfortunately, his wife hated the habit. One day, she said “If you won’t quit that filthy habit at least smoke outside”. Old man Wagner was more than happy with this arrangement. First, he could smoke to his heart’s content, and second, he didn’t have to hear his wife nag him the whole day.
One October 31st, Old man Wagner, or Bill as I will now start calling him that, started climbing up to his usual spot under a tree. “Being a hot day” he thought “It’s good weather for smoking, I might aswell carry a lot.” So he went back into the house and came out with 2 kegs of Arabian tobbaco. “The best kind” he said.
As he was walking out the door, Dame Wagner stuck her head out the window. “I found another one of your filthy pipes under the bed!” she yelled “I tossed it in the trash!”. ‘Nag, Nag, Nag. That’s all she ever does’ thought Bill as he headed up to his shady spot under the tree.
As Bill approached his spot, he got quite a shock. A stranger wearing a dark hood was at his spot. When Bill approached the stranger said “Bill, I have been waiting for you. My ...spies tell me that you are said to be the biggest smoker in the whole area. Do you agree?” His voice was scratchy, like charcoal on a blackboard, as if there was a fire in his throat that had been burning from the beginning of time itself. “I do what I can” Bill replied
Suddenly, the stranger’s eyes lit up, on fire, put then just as suddenly the flames dissapeared. “I, the devil, challenge you to a contest to see who can smoke the most tobbaco.” “ I accept” said Bill and he divided the two kegs between himself and the devil.
