What is Diabetes
• Too much glucose in the blood
• Pancreas produces little or no insulin
• Too much glucose can lead to serious health problems.

Causes/ Risk Factors
• Overweight and obesity
• Older age
• Lack of exercise
• genetics
• Unhealthy eating

Causes/ Risk Factors cont..
• Use of certain medications, including steroid and blood
pressure medications
• Alcohol (risk increases with years of heavy alcohol use)
• Smoking
• Physical stress (such as surgery or illness)

Signs and symptoms
• Frequent urination
• Excessive thirst
• Unexplained weight loss
• Extreme hunger
• Sudden vision changes

• Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
• Feeling very tired much of the time
• Very dry skin
• Sores that are slow to heal
• More infections than usual

Insulin dependent for life
Pancreas transplant may be an option

Diet and exercise
By mouth medication like metformin and glipizide
Insulin

• Retinopathy
• Nephropathy
• Neuropathy

• Foot damage
