Differentiate Between Groupwork and Teamwork

Nowadays, teamwork is very common in working places because through good use of teamwork, works can be completed much more efficient. However, the terms “team” and “group” are often mistakenly thought to be the same, this essay will compare and contrast the terms “team” and “group” and also evaluate Belbins prescription that has been put forward for the development of effective work team. In particular, the essay will be divided into 4 sections, the first section will focus on the terms “team”, the second section will focus on the term “group”, then the third sections will compare and contrast the two terms and finally the last section will focus on Belbins prescription.
There are a lot of definitions for the term “team”, one of them is: "A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they are mutually accountable" (Katzenbach and Smith, 1993). Indeed, a team consists of 2 or more people, who have different abilities but are needed so that they can help each other to achieve a consensus goal which also means the goal is accepted or agreed by all the members of the team. Also, all the members of the team are responsible for the effects of actions that the team makes. As the result of having different skills that can aid each other in the team, there are rarely conflictions between the works of each member but the works is interdependent which mean they have to work together.
As for “group” definition: “group of people with complementary skills and abilities who are committed to a leader's goal and approach and are willing to be held accountable by the leader” (Deborah Mackin, no date). From the definition, we can see that group is just a set of people with skills that are putted together to work under a leader.
