Rhetorical Appeal
In society many novels are being made into films. Many novels leave the reader wanting to read more or even wanting to read the book again. It turns out that good plots and an epic dimension translate well from page to screen. But the attempt to compare the story from page to screen changes the perspective of the story behind the book, which makes readers prefer the book better than the film. Divergent is an example of this. Many people prefer the book better than movie. The book represents more suspense and details which the movie doesn’t cover.
The novel, Divergent, takes place in the abandon city of Chicago. The society is divided into five factions however each faction is assigned a specific virtue. The factions are Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. Candor is known to be honest. Abnegation is known as the selfless. Dauntless is known to be the brave. Amity as the peaceful and Erudite as the intelligent. These factions are all located in different parts of the city of Chicago. In this society teenagers, at the age of sixteen, have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another for the rest of their lives. For those who choose beyond their faction, this means facing an uphill climb to belong. If they fail, they cannot return and cannot stay, and thus become factionless. Beatrice Prior is one of the sixteen year olds in this society that have to make this choice of picking a faction. She is from the faction Abnegation has to choose if she will remain with her factions or to pledge her life to one of the other four factions. She has never fit in with her family or her faction. Beatrice takes her aptitude test in the beginning of the novel. While she is taking her test the lady, Tori, who is giving her test tells her that the results were inconclusive, each stage of the test is meant to eliminate one or more factions, but in her case, only two were eliminated...
