Bernice Avina History 101 G 10/15/08 Dolly Payne Madison (1768-1849) Dolly Madison was best known as the wife of President James Madison. There were other few things that she was known for besides being the wife of the President. One of the things for which she is known for is that during the war of 1812 she saved many state papers and a portrait of George Washington. I think that what she did was something she should be remembered for. She would also help her husband entertain the guest that would go to the white house. I chose Dolley Madison because I had never heard of her. I knew that she might have been the wife of James Madison when I saw her name on the list. Since I had never heard anything from her then I grew curiosity to learn some things about her. That is why I chose to write about Dolley because she was never familiar to me. Dolley Payne Madison was born in New Garden on May 20, 1768. It was a Quaker community that was located in Guilford County, North Carolina. Her father was John Payne and her mother was Mary Coles. She had four brothers and three young sisters. Dolley’s family lived in Hanover and there they were planters. Later the family moved to Philadelphia, there Dolley went to Salem Academy School. They moved to Philadelphia for better education and to be closer to their Quaker roots. Her first marriage was on January 7, 1790 to John Todd. Together they had two sons John Payne and William Temple. In 1793 there was a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia and her husband died. Their youngest son William also died in 1793 from yellow fever. On September 14, 1794 she married James Madison. They had no children during their marriage. Her family wasn’t too happy about her marrying James Madison because she was a Quaker and he was not. During the war of 1812 Dolley saved the portrait of George Washington. When she was at the white house she had a telescope to look out her window to see signs of red-coated British infantry, Royal Marines....
