These domestic violence phone calls can come from anybody. Not only can it happen to anybody, anybody can report it, and should report it. Domestic violence has become a far more prevalent issue in recent years. With the issue of domestic violence getting more attention from the public, that also means the law has paid more attention to it as well, which shows in federal and state government statutes and training developments.
In the United States, domestic violence police calls account for about 20% of calls for crimes against women, and about 3-5% for crimes against men. Anyone can become a victim of domestic violence, and anyone can call the police during a domestic dispute. These calls can come from the victim, a witness, even a police officer patrolling that bears witness to the domestic dispute. Even the suspect in some cases may call the police on themselves. We would have to study the people committing such acts in order to further understand it, and even then we may never truly know the reason.
Firstly, we must define domestic violence in order to better understand what cause it. Domestic violence is the means of using any sort of physical, psychological, emotional, sexual or economic abuse in order to gain and maintain power over another. Domestic violence is typically a pattern of behavior, not just a one-time thing. This type of violence can happen in many different ways and it can happen to anyone (Erez, 2002).
