Teen drug use is increasing drastically every day. Parents may act doubtful that their teenage child is using drugs, but it is statistically proven that 89% of teens will be exposed to drugs and alcohol in their lifetime. Out of the 89%, 67% will experiment. Teens, as young as 13 years old, often times have already tried powerful drugs such as cocaine. Teens might tell themselves they will only try a drug once, but many times they find themselves under a massive amount of peer pressure. The pressure they receive from their peers leads them to continue to experiment with drugs. Drugs are a very serious and important issue that needs to be addressed openly and honestly with any child. The only way to influence a teenager about drugs is to communicate with them. Communication is the number one way to keeping a teenager healthy and happy. There are way too many teens involved in drug activity. This problem can be resolved by having this brought to the attention of the parents. Parents many times find it difficult and uncomfortable to talk to their child, but it is the only way to get a teenager to understand the effects of drugs. Getting the child’s understanding of drugs will decrease the chance that he or she will experiment with hazardous drugs. Some tips to help parents feel more comfortable about talking to their teen about drugs is first, letting their kids know that they understand the effect ad signs of drugs, give the teen a full outlook on the negative and downside effects of drugs, and lastly, point out people that are using drugs.
First, the most important tip for parents talking to their child about drugs is for them to let the teenager know the knowledge parents have about the effects and signs of drug use. This helpful tip will make the child feel like they cannot try them without the parent knowing. This will make them want to take no risks and therefore decrease the chance of them ever trying drugs.
