Instead of experiencing the love affair he so wanted, he had a secret hidden love affair through another man without Roxane knowing until the very end. Cyrano’s insecurities about his large nose hindered his ability to communicate to her directly how he felt. I wish Cyrano would have told Roxane in the beginning that he was in love with her so that maybe they could have experienced a relationship together. Because he did not, and she didn’t know until the end of his life, he died without loving Roxane openly. For me, this part made the ending a sad one.
Cyrano had so many wonderful character traits that made him an incredible friend and person as a whole. He was incredibly loyal. When Christian died, Cyrano remained silent about the live letters until he too was about to pass away. Even though Christian told Cyrano “Roxane loves you, just tell her” Cyrano remained quiet. Cyrano was a very selfless person, and often put others before himself. Roxane and Christian’s happiness came before his own in this story. Reading the play, I had such love and respect for Cyrano and was amazed at the life he lived.
