Political Science November 3, 2008 Is Voting For Young People? “For years, political scientists have told their students that it doesn’t make a difference whether they vote because one vote won’t make a difference” (Richard Niemi). As the 2008 presidential election comes to a close, many people are wondering how many young people will get out there to vote. That is one question I haven’t really been able to answer because I was of age until now. However, after reading this book by Wattenberg, it showed the realization of the many reasons why the turnout of the young people’s vote has changed. Throughout this book, as a young person you can depict that the information provided you are able to formulate an opinion about the current issues in politics and how it can be changed. In today’s generation of young voters, they tend to have the mindset of “I want it now”. That goes from money, jobs, etc. So is there going to be any difference when it comes to the news? When they want the news they will just sit down in a spare time and flip on the television. And if they want to hear only what they want to, then turning on the television is the best way of getting the news. The media itself knows that unfortunately, so tend to make things biased. The soft news such as Fox News, CNN, and other cable broadcasted news make it very difficult to discern what is their thoughts and what people actually think. Majority of the news shown today has its favorites; they have already chosen sides on the candidate. Or in fact just what they want you to know about that specific topic. This then makes it difficult for people to come up with their own opinions about what’s going on with politics. And if that is hard to distinguish with the older people, how are the younger people going to understand? Although statics show that majority of the young people don’t know much about the politics in this world, I still feel that voting is a privilege that we have and yet we take it for...
