According to the Pew Research Center, there are 160,000 fast food restaurants in America. They also found out that over 50 million Americans are served each day (Fast Food Statistics). Whether it’s from McDonalds, Taco Bell, Bojangles, Wendy’s, or Burger King, people all over the country are waiting to snatch up the next new thing on the dollar menus. But do we really know what we are putting into our bodies… or do we just know what we THINK is going into us?
Most would argue that it’s not the food itself that makes you fat, that it’s the overall calorie intake, but the amount of calories that are in each item of fast food have the possibility to take up the total majority of your daily calories in one meal. Of course, if you’re active like you should be, you probably won’t notice all the damages that it has on ’s doing to your body on the outside, but, just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not happening. In a recent study done by chemistry professor Martyn Poliakoff from The University of Nottingham, they put a McDonald’s cheeseburger into a bowl of concentrated hydrochloric acid and left it for three and a half hours to show how your stomach acid can break down the substances put in it. Hydrochloric acid is extremely corrosive and is used in many industrial fields as a chemical to remove steel, process leathers, purify salt, and neutralize water (Fast Food Stats). After three and a half hours hovering halfway into the concentrated hydrochloric acid, the container became thick with black liquid from the burger but was not fully broken down.
