In the documentary, Unnatural Causes, the authors promote some policies that they feel would make for a more fair playing ground, for lack of better terms. They feel as though policies like universal healthcare stricter zoning laws, housing assistance and mandatory paid vacations would promote better health. I disagree with most of these policies, especially universal healthcare. As we’ve seen in the many countries that have adopted universal healthcare, it has not only eliminated their market competition but has been pure chaos in a sense. Universal health care is likely to reduce the quality of health care and can cause a shortage, which can result in extensive lines and wait times. Universal healthcare also imposes on those who do not consume of benefit from health insurance, but now are mandated to adopt it. Zoning laws are also, in my opinion, a waste of policy. By requiring businesses to supply in an area that is not in their best interest, or by prohibiting less-healthy fast food businesses from an area in which they would be successful, you are not doing much for the people of the community in which you are trying to help. Requiring a Whole Foods to open a location in a poverty stricken area in order to promote better health is not a sound decision for the business or the community. The business will suffer and the community will not gain. There are reasons why McDonalds are prevalent in less economically sound areas, in order to change this, we must start at the root of the issue. A living wage, similarly, tends to hurt those in need more so than it helps. By mandating businesses and corporations to provide a salary to employees that is not in their best interest, it is likely that they will find other ways to cut their losses, a great example of this is hiring less productive workers; by going against the laws of supply and demand, those workers are now worse off than they were before this policy.
