In order for people to be able to express their needs and wants to another person they
need to be able to communicate, they may use the following to do so: listening, speaking, gestures and signals they do this through communication channels these channels are what connect the source and receiver. Devito (2008) suggests that when we communicate we use “vocal-auditory channel, gestural-visual channel and chemical-olfactory channel” (p. 11). Communication is the transfer of information to those involved. Communication is “like a motion picture in which the meaning comes from the unfolding of an interrelated series of images” (Adler & Rodman, 1946, p.2). It is the process in which messages are generated and sent by one person and received and translated by another person. However, the meaning generated by the receiver can be different from the sender’s intended message. Communication is the exchange of information, ideas, thoughts and feelings. It involves not just the spoken words, which is known as verbal communication but also what is conveyed through inflexion, vocal quality, facial expression, body posture. This may be referred to as non-verbal communication. Non-verbal cues may provide clarity or contradiction for a message being sent (Dunn, 1998). Encoding and Decoding is a two part process that also can be seen as a more developed version of the sender – receiver. Devito (2008) suggests “the term encoding – decoding is used to emphasize that the two activities are performed in combination by each participant. For interpersonal communication to occur, messages must be encoded and decoded” (p.10). Complex information, noise, emotions and poor listening could ultimately hinder effective communication. Some of what facilitates effective communication can be emotional intelligence, active listening, empathy (which is part of emotional intelligence) and Feedback.
