French Revolution Essay
The French Revolution was impacted greatly by Enlightenment ideas of the time as they would shape how the French people and The National Convention would govern the nation in its short, but bloody Revolutionary Era. The invention of the Metric system reflects Enlightenment ideas as it was made to unite the provinces that use different system of measurements depending on where in the country you were. The Declaration of the Rights of Man reflects Enlightenment ideas as it promotes the equality of all men, no matter social standing. The final idea was De-Christianization as it promoted a senses of unity throughout the country as the main religion of time would be taken out of society entirely and a sense of freedom from religion. The ideas of Enlightenment influenced the Revolution in multiple ways.
The metric system was implemented to unite the French people that used separate system of measurements throughout the provinces. The way it was set up was that one meter (the basic unit) was to be one ten millionth of one quarter of the meridian that Paris lies on, the latitude line of 45 degrees. All other lesser units were to be made into a decimal system. This reflects Enlightenment as the main purpose of this idea was to bring order and simplicity by units of 10, unlike the use of different systems of measurements all throughout the country. 1 kilometer would equal 100 meters, thus further promoting the fact that it increased by multiple of ten, which would make life simply. The use of the metric system in Revolutionary France was a major step in creating a simply republic.
The Declaration of the Rights of Man reflects enlightened ideas as the document promotes the equality of all man no matter social status.
