Effects of Media Violence on Children
Today in many people’s living rooms there sits an outlet of violence that often goes unnoticed. For instance, children who are raised with watching gory scenes end up growing up with stronger violent tendencies. For example, according to Today Show on April 8, 2008, six girls ganged up on a classmate, slamming her head into a wall and taking turns pummeling and videotaping her. Furthermore, youngsters build violent fantasies like going on a rampage with guns and killing students at college, slaughtering their families, or even slaying rape victims thinking that they can carry out a perfect homicide without getting caught due to watching shows like Mastermind, CSI, and Extreme Forensics. In addition, one morning my daughter was watching Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck on T.V., and she would laugh extremely whenever she saw Elmer Fudd shooting Daffy Duck while his head went twirling around. The next day, she shot her pet dog to see if its head would twirl around. In short, simply by turning the television set, children are routinely exposed to beatings, murders, sexual assaults, and much more.
