Benefit from the Eightfold Path—Right Speech
Right speech is the third part of the eightfold path, which means that watch our speech to become aware of what we say and how we say it. The reason why I think right speech is the most beneficial for me because language and words have positive and negative impacts. Since time immemorial, language can destroy life, make the enemy and cause war; on the other hand, it can give wisdom, eliminate differences and create peace. Due to the modern media technology, the speed and range of speech is expanding rapidly, and the positive and negative aspects of speech are likely to expand. Therefore, the right speech influences on people’s daily life more.
In my opinion, right speech is not to talk nonsense and to tell the truth. Do not deliberately lie, for our own interests or even the interests of others. However, to decide whether people tell the right speech is based on whether people have the intention to deceive others. If people tell the false speech because they think their statement is true, they are not breaking the commandment since they do not have the intention to deceive. For instance, my friend asked me how to prepare for the drivers license test, and I told him to read the driver license handbook; I also told him to bring his passport and I20 to the test. My friend drove to the DMV; however, he could not get the test because the date on his I20 expires in December 2013. After he told me that, I felt guilty, but he did not blame me because I did not know that fact either.
Once we talk the false speech and tell a lie, in order to defend our credit, we have to lie again and interweave those lies into a perfect image. Therefore, we have to repeat the process over and over until we have locked ourselves into those lies. The people who in false speech are engulfed by their lies and eventually become its victims.
