Firstly, Organizational Structure can be defined as “how a job tasks are formally divided, grouped or coordinated” taken from p425 Organizational Behavior by Stephen P. Robbins. There needs to be structure in anything you do to receive the required outcome whether it be, in building a house or as in this case offering a service to customers. This concept can be broken down further by stating the six key elements which make up organizational structure some of which should be taken into consideration to discuss the core problem. These elements are specialization, departmentalization, chain of command, span of control, centralization and formalization.
Work Specialization can be defined plainly as stated in its name “when a worker is given a specific task and that worker does that task and only that task every working day”. Specialization can be motivating or demotivating but as seen in this case it is more the latter. The job although interesting for Kipsy and other workers at first was exciting but now have become boring and monotonous and also resulted in a high turnover of workers. Motivation or the lack thereof is not the only issue affecting the workers and management in this organization however it will be discussed in detail by one of my colleagues making reference to scenarios in the Eric and Kipsy case.
Another key element of Organizational Structure that affected the smooth running of the organization was its centralized. Centralization can be explained as “the amount of decision making power concentrated in one point of the organization” and in this case that position is at the top where the lower management has no say. The centralization structure brought about a lack of motivation, job satisfaction and also affected the communication between all. Centralization did not allow for any input either by the immediate supervisor which in this case was Eric furthermore the workers resulting in the motivation of the workers to be lacking along with job...
