Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie , Countess in Bavaria(* 24.December 1837, Munich, Died 10. September 1898 in Genf, was a princess of the sideline Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld-Gelnhausen oft he house of Wittelsbach and through her marriage , 1854with Franz Joseph 1, the empress of Austria and 1867 the apostolic queen of Hungaria.
Elisabeth was the second daughter of Herzog Max Joseph in Bavaria ( 1808 1888) and his wife pricess Ludovica Wilhelmine (1808 – 1892) daughter of the Bavarian King Maximilian I, and his second wife princess Karoline Friederike Wilhelmine von Baden. Baptistname was from Elisabeth aunt, Queen Elisabeth Ludovika of Preußen, wo also as her later mother in law was a sister to her mother Ludovika.
Elisabeth and her siblings grew up in the Count Max Palais in Munich (she was also born there). In the summertime the family used to reside in Possenhofen at the Stamberger Lake. The children had an easy and free life, as the parents had no obligations/duties at the Kings court.
Engagement in Bad Ischl and Wedding
Elisabeth s Mother and her sister/the emperosrs mother) wanted Elisabeths older sister Helen( also called Nene) to engage with the Emperor Franz Joseph I, at this time 23 years old. In the Summer of 1853 they travel to the monarchs Birthday in Bad Ischl and secretly to an engagement.
Ludovica travels with her both daughters, Helene and Elisabeth on 16.August 1853 to Bad Ischl, but Franz Joseph chooses Elisabeth(15 years) instead of Helene. On the 18th August he askes to marry her. Both parents agree. The Count gives his daughter a Mitgift of 50.000 Gulden, dresses and jewellry. 20th of April 1854 Elisabeth leaves Munich, travels to Straubing and from there on tob e on the ship called Franz Joseph to Vienna. 24th of April 1854 she marrie the Emperor in the Augustinerkirche infront of 70 Bischhoefen, the ceremony was lead by cardinal Joseph Othmar von Rauscher.
