Kidd English 1301 Equality: Same Sex Marriage Equality is equal access to opportunities and equal participation in all aspects of our society for both men and women, but also for members of different races, ethnic groups and religions. Same sex marriage has been a debate for many years now (Reid). While opponents of the issue call it a “protection of marriage”, the supporters of same sex marriage are calling it “marriage equality” (Reid). The ability to gain joint ownership is a civil right, and gay men and women have the right to do so as much as heterosexual couples. The school bell rang, but for Sarah this meant more than just walking to class. It consisted of being picked on and having things thrown at her, but she held her head high. The students knew two homosexual men raised her, but to her they were the definition of parents and nothing about their sexual preference bothered her (Wolfson, 294). In today’s society different means negative, Americans have a hard time accepting difference. Americans also reject the unnatural, such as if homosexual couples were to wed, they would also want to raise children. Because of society’s harsh judgment, the children of same sex marriages do get picked on throughout their life. Meanwhile the children love their parents for who they are and are willing to accept the fact that they are different (Wolfson, 294). Numerous authorities agree that children of same sex marriages are as healthy, happy and well adjusted as those with heterosexual parents (Wolfson, 296). Same sex marriage does not affect anyone but the couple in the relationship and the choice is one gained by every citizen. Marriage between same sex relationships can decrease the amount of orphans with adopting. “Homosexual marriage preserves and promotes a set of moral values that are essential to civilized society.
