Equilibrium
Earlier today I was watching an action movie called Equilibrium starring Christian Bale. In order to write about what’s going through my head, I first feel like I have to explain what the movie is about.
The movie takes place in Post-World War III. With the technology and weapons of today and future, the world experiences the most destructive war ever. It was so destructive that the majority of the world is inhabitable. All the political figureheads in the world agreed, that the world cannot ever experience a war as such ever again. So all the political figureheads around the world agree to establish a new world order. In the new world order, society is to be controlled emotionally. It is believed that emotion is what ultimately leads the world into war (Emotions such as Greed, Selfishness, Envy, Hate, Anger, Jealousy, Rage and ect…). To suppress these emotions, all the citizens must inject themselves and their loved ones with emotion suppressing drugs. However, this is not enough. Anything else that can cause emotion is forbidden in this utopia, such as Paintings, Sex, Music, Photography, Movies, Literary Art, and even color itself is forbidden. The color scheme in this utopian society is grey with all of its shades. In order to secure the utopian society from itself, the new world order established a military-like force which specialized in searching and destroying all the forbidden works, and making sure that all of the citizens are taking their emotion-suppressing injections on a daily basis. The main character (Christian Bale), is an officer of this force. After skipping two days of injections, the character starts to feel emotions and experience life different from all of the society. He then realizes life is not worth living without emotions, and decides to take “The System” down.
