I believe serves as the backbone of a society. The first group of people whom a baby interacts with is their family. The family helps to mole children and teaches them what’s right and what’s wrong, the norms and values of society. I agree with the functionalist perspective that family performs “six paramount functions.” The six paramount are reproduction; protection; socialization; regulation of sexual behavior; affection and companionship; provision of social status.
The nuclear family is one of the most common types of family, but it is becoming the least popular in today’s society. The nuclear family consists of a mother, father and child/children. Usually mother and father decide to get married and have children; many reasons may influence them to get married. For example love, family, or the woman being pregnant. In some countries marriage tend to be arranged by the parents. The dissolution of this family can be due to the loss of interest in each other or the child/ children and that was the reason for the mother and father staying together. Sometimes the couple divorces because they were never in love with each other or they find that they were never compatible with each other in the first place. This may be seen in arranged marriages.
The extended family consists normally of a mother, father, children, aunts, uncles and grandmothers and grandfathers living in the same house. This family is usually brought together due to financial problems, death in family or just tradition. Dissolution of this type of family can be due to the distribution of responsible, be it chores or finances.
Dual-Income families are nuclear families but both parents have a career. It has the same characteristics are a nuclear family. It can be torn apart due to the fact that one parent works too much and doesn’t spend enough time with the family. It can also be because the children were the only thing keeping them together.
