Finding Forrester
In Outliers, some of the ingredients of success are opportunities, advantages and disadvantages which were all shown in the movie Finding Forrester. Opportunities, advantages and disadvantages were factors that shaped Jamal’s success. Jamal’s success is being able to write the foreword for Forrester’s book Sunsets and advance in basketball.
To begin with, opportunities for Jamal were having the invention to attend Malior-Callon and asking Forrester to critique his writing. Attending Mailor-Callon, Jamal was in a safe and positive atmosphere where he could put both his basketball and writing skills to use. Playing for Mailor-Callon Jamal did have Hartwell’s competition and the fact that these two didn’t get along only made Jamal want to shine more. Let’s face it Hartwell was only good but Jamal was fantastic and he knew it. “And what’s more, the people at the very top don’t work just harder or even much harder than everyone else. They work much, much harder” (Gladwell 39). Jamal was hardworking when it came to basketball that lead to his benefits for Mailor-Callon and their benefits for him which were recruitment letters. To show relation both Bill Gates and Jamal were faced with the same opportunity that was going to one of the best schools. Allowing Forrester to critique Jamal’s writing helped Jamal open up and advanced his writing skills. At the beginning of Finding Forrester, before Jamal became a friend of Forrester’s his talent of writing was unknown. In the beginning we were only shown his talent of basketball which he preferred to share with his friends over his writing journal. While Forrester critiqued Jamal’s writing, he was practicing more and becoming comfortable sharing his wonderful writing talent.
To return to the subject, Jamal’s advantages were having a caring mother and Mr. Crawford as a difficult teacher. In one of the scenes in Finding...
